Ministry of Health Health Education Section
The goal of the SSDI-Communication project was to support the Government of Malawi to improve the health and wellbeing of Malawians. A significant part of achieving this goal involved capacity strengthening of key national institutional partners in designing and implementing effective SBCC interventions. The Health Education Section (HES) is recognized as the hub and lead in health promotion and SBCC within the Ministry of Health, which made HES an obvious and essential partner for SSDI-Communication and a key audience for capacity strengthening initiatives.
SSDI-Communication implemented a series of tailored capacity strengthening activities to support the HES’s efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of Malawians through high-quality health promotion and SBCC activities. To determine the HES’s capacity gaps and needs, the project first conducted a capacity assessment. Based on this assessment, staff implemented a comprehensive series of capacity strengthening activities in partnership with the HES, which are detailed in this section of the toolkit.
The main capacity strengthening initiatives implemented in collaboration with HES were:
- Knowledge management
- Monitoring and coordination
- Policy and strategy development
- Training in Leadership in Strategic Health Communication
The HES has shown strong and responsive leadership in health communication and has greatly strengthened its capacity to lead Malawi in the area of social and behavior change communication and health promotion. The HES was an essential and irreplaceable partner in the design, development, and implementation of the Moyo ndi Mpamba campaign.
