Mobile Technologies for Health (mHealth)

One of K4Health’s growing practice areas is mHealth—the use of mobile technologies (including phones, tablets, and netbooks) to improve public health.

mHealth is of particular interest in developing countries, where widespread mobile networks and access to devices are connecting people like never before, leap-frogging older technologies to dramatically improve information flow, data collection, social and behavior change, and emergency response.

For example, SMS/text-based campaigns can be an effective way to share health information with people who lack reliable internet access.

There are now more than 5 billion mobile phone subscriptions globally, making it the most pervasive information-sharing platform ever. Recognizing the potential of mobile technologies and approaches to transform knowledge-sharing, K4Health is an active participant across the mHealth value chain. Our activities include:

  • Spearheading an interdisciplinary mHealth Working Group to share best and emerging practices;
  • Creating and managing the mHealth Toolkit, which provides access to key mHealth resources;
  • Publishing a special supplement to the K4Health Newsletter: Focus on mHealth;
  • Collaborating with leading organizations on how best to monitor and evaluate mHealth programs;
  • Implementing or supporting mHealth activities within our field-based programs, where appropriate; and
  • Developing mobile applications and interfaces to make K4Health's content available on mobile devices.

    It’s always exciting to see how the rapidly evolving use of electronic technologies is helping to improve health in Africa.  But innovation, by nature, initially provides benefits unevenly.  This workshop, co-hosted by Futures Group and Intel, is a welcome effort to improve eHealth standards across borders.  By sharing information, healthcare stakeholders aim to foster public-private partnerships, build support networks and improve healthcare delivery.

    Now that the GSMA/mHealth Alliance Mobile Health Summit in Cape Town is finished, it’s time to start looking forward to December’s mHealth Summit in Washington, DC.

    The mHealth Summit recently announced its choice of Global Health as a cross-cutting track. This is great news—not only because of the rapid growth of mobile phone use in developing countries and the corresponding use in health but also because of the surge in interest in the field of mHealth. Witness the rise in the membership of the mHealth Working Group – from 20 in 2009 to 700+ in 2012 (www.mhealthworkingroup.org).

    This is the fourth in a series of posts about changes to K4Health's web products portfolio (here’s Part 1 from December, Part 2 from March, and Part 3 from April).

    The newest change in the grand scheme of changes to K4Health's web products portfolio is up. The revised Toolkits application has had its first road test with the mHealth Toolkit, which went live on Thursday.

    The Toolkits system is a knowledge management tool for groups and organizations in the public health sphere, allowing them to effectively present and curate a collection of resources online. The biggest differences between the new Toolkits system and the previous version are:

    Scalability. Sustainable business models.  Working with network operators. These are the challenges that we end up talking about at mHealth gatherings, frequently without a lot of answers.

    But I am happy to report from this year’s GSMA mHealth Alliance Mobile Health Summit that there is a lot of promise, progress, and action. I had the opportunity to speak on Thursday, May 31, as part of panel looking at how mHealth interventions are contributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, which was well received. I’ve enjoyed catching up with friends in this dynamic sector, and to see more and more collaboration and convergence around common goals.
