This training and reference guide was developed for family planning service providers interested in using the Checklist for Screening Clients Who Want to Initiate DMPA (or NET-EN), commonly referred to as the “DMPA Checklist”. Designed to serve as both a training and reference tool, the guide is composed of two parts: a training module and a collection of essential, up-to-date reference materials. The guide is part of a series to train on other checklists, including the Checklist for Screening Clients Who Want to Initiate COCs, the Checklist for Screening Clients Who Want to Initiate Use of the Copper IUD, and the checklist entitled How to Be Reasonably Sure a Client is Not Pregnant.

New Study on Use of Injectable Contraceptives and HIV Risk
A new study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases suggests that use of injectables may double the risk of uninfected women acquiring HIV and of HIV-infected women transmitting the virus to their uninfected partners.
For now, international health organizations and donors, including WHO, UNAIDS, and USAID, caution against making hasty changes to contraceptive policy or practice. WHO is convening a Technical Consultation from 31 January to 1 February 2012 to examine all evidence related to the potential effects of hormonal contraception on HIV acquisition, transmission, and disease progression, and will decide whether modifications need to be made to current WHO guidance.
